The quantifiable business benefits are as follows:
- By maintaining just one copy of each Code List in a common format and sharing it across all users the cost of maintaining essential reference data for application systems can be reduced. For business case purposes we assume 0.5% of the application maintenance costs of the Listpoint user base.
- By helping to synchronize the release of new versions of code lists across interconnected applications the cost of dealing with failed interface messages can be reduced. We assume a further 0.5% of the application maintenance costs of the Listpoint user base.
- By providing comprehensive code list and code map maintenance tools as part of Listpoint any new applications built with Listpoint in mind can save the cost of building most reference data edit screens that otherwise need to be provided. We assume this may save 0.5% of the development costs of new applications.
If these modest percentage savings were applied to the entire public sector IT estate (annual £14bn expenditure) and we assume £5bn of development and £2bn of maintenance per year the saving amounts to £45m per year against annual running costs for Listpoint of less than £100k.
